`build/` only covers the directory the presets use, so `cmake -S . -B .` left CMakeFiles/, Makefile, cmake_install.cmake and the generated include/plot/version.hpp untracked in the repository root -- which shows up as dirty content in the parent project's status whenever the submodule is checked out.
