Martino Ferrari 1d5b286611 crosshair: axis badges, clustered cursor labels, and the shared-y horizontal line

- Axis badges: the y value in the y label strip and the x time in the x strip, each a
full-opacity panel in the crosshair's colour, **centred on the line it names**. The tick
text is flushed before the fill -- the over-text batch is flushed after every line batch,
so without that flush the label behind printed through the panel (the "transparent
  backplate" defect).
- Cursor labels: collected across the cursor loop and clustered at its end, so two marks in
one column share a panel with one line each instead of overprinting, and a label stays on
  its own mark's row.
- Figure: a split row's cells share one y (`set_share_row_y`), so the horizontal line is
drawn in every cell of the hovered row -- one value, one scale, spanning the row -- and
  still in no other row.

Tests: `figure_crosshair_horizontal_spans_a_split_rows_cells`, plus the render-smoke
additions for the badge placement/flush and the clustered labels.

Martino Ferrari f79a97be9b fix: a density grid is bounded in cells, not by the window's pixels
A grid was the axes rect in device pixels, so dragging a window wide made the
image wider with it -- and the per-frame pass over it is O(cells): the fade
multiplies every cell, a host's ink()/peak() read every cell, and a frame the
fade moved converts and uploads every cell as one byte. At 2x device scale a
1520x850 window's axes rect is 2877 device pixels wide, so four rows of one
trace are 4.5 M cells and 4.9 MB uploaded a frame; measured headless on
llvmpipe with a 2 s window, 12.9 ms of tick and 12.8 ms of draw a frame, every
frame under a time fade -- a cost that follows the window and has no ceiling.

The grid is now the axes rect up to kDensityCellCap (2^18 cells, a mebibyte of
counts), scaled down uniformly past it so cells stay square and the picture
keeps the axes' aspect, and magnified back over the rect with a linear filter:
a cell is a count, so a fragment between two of them is between their two ink
levels, which a point sample cannot give once a cell is several pixels wide.
The same four rows at the cap are 1.05 M cells, 3.9 ms of tick and 5.6 ms of
draw and 1.0 MB uploaded, while a grid under the cap is untouched -- a 640x360
viewport's 573x313 axes is still 179 349 cells, one a device pixel.

The image's footprint is the axes rect rounded up to whole device pixels on
both sides of the pipe, so a grid under the cap keeps the exact
one-texel-a-pixel mapping it has always had (sx/sy come out exactly 1) and only
a capped grid reads its cell index through a scale. Moving the decay itself to
the GPU was considered and left out: the CPU grid is what ink()/peak() read,
what the deposit adds to and what the per-sweep dedupe keys on, so a GPU image
would have to be reconciled with it per frame -- a larger change than this
bound, and not one to half-do.

Tests: a_density_grid_is_capped_whatever_the_window reads the bound off a
3840x2160 viewport (261 504 cells of a 3784x2138 axes, aspect kept),
a_capped_density_is_magnified_over_the_axes_rect reads the screen side of it
(569x460 cells covering all 832 of the rect's columns), and the density cases
now assert their capped figures. 399 cases, 0 failed.

Martino Ferrari 1b8b55d3ee feat: a phosphor density is the trace, one grid per trace in its own colour
A user looked at the display and reported three things at once: "there is clearly a gain offset
between latest acquisition and persistent image", "persistent instead of being brighter + opaque is
just gray/white", and "last acquisition does not seem to be affected, it looks like persistent image
+ last acquisition (so for example last acquisition never fade in time mode)". What they add up to is
that this was not a phosphor yet: it was a **density with a solid trace drawn over it**.

Four changes, and the first is the one the others follow from:

- **The current acquisition is deposited like every other, and no solid trace is drawn over the
image.** `Renderer::draw_traces()` returns at once while a density is on: the trace ink *is* the
image, so the newest acquisition is a sweep inside it and fades with it. Drawing the polyline as
well put a solid, unfading stroke over its own faint ghost -- the reported "persistent image + last
acquisition", where the last acquisition never faded in time mode.
- **One grid per trace, in that trace's own colour.** `Plot::density_grid(trace)` is one screen-sized
`f32` grid per trace, deposited from that trace and drawn in `Trace::color`, because a density that
had one hue for the plot could not say *which* trace put the ink there -- two signals agreeing in a
cell would be one blended pixel. The display's memory is therefore `traces * columns * rows * 4`
bytes rather than one plot's worth (a trace with no series, an unbound slot, holds no grid), which
is the one cost this change adds: four signals in one 800x480 row are four grids, 6 MB.
- **The ceiling is the trace's own brightness, not the fade's steady state.** `full_scale` now
defaults to **one sweep**: a cell with one acquisition's ink is drawn in its trace's colour at that
colour's own alpha, and a signal crossing the same place every acquisition settles *at* the colour
its trace would have drawn (the ceiling clamps) rather than a fraction of a brighter steady state --
the gain offset the user reported. `Style::density`'s near-white 0.85 tint is gone with it, because
there is no one tint any more. A caller that wants the fade's ramp on screen instead still sets
`full_scale` to the sum the fade settles at and accepts the offset; that is a legitimate choice, just
not the one a phosphor makes.

The reading is a **framebuffer** one, because neither `ink`/`peak` nor a tint can make a colour or a
fade: `a_phosphor_density_is_the_trace_in_its_own_colour` deposits one sweep, checks the saturated
cell is *exactly* the trace's colour (`full=224`, the trace's `0xE0` green, against `bg=25` -- the old
monochrome tint read ~190 red), then fades it one time constant and checks the same pixel is dimmer
(`faded=115`) and still the trace's hue -- which a stroke over the density could not do. It moves the
trace and draws without depositing to prove no polyline is drawn (`moved` equals the no-density frame
at the moved row), and reads a steady state against a quarter of it (`steady=224`, `quarter=138`), in
the signal's colour throughout. `a_density_holds_one_grid_per_trace` reads two traces' grids apart
(`267 472 cells each, ink 584/584`, in two rows). The grid's own cases are unchanged where they should
be (`a_density_halves_per_acquisition_and_keeps_the_newest_brightest` `peak_steady=2.000`,
`a_density_fades_by_its_time_constant` `exp(-dt/tau)`).

Suite: **397 cases, 0 failed**, 4/4 ctest entries.

Martino Ferrari 6a6915e64e feat: a plot can carry a phosphor density, one image for every acquisition
`Plot::set_density()` gives a plot a **phosphor density**: a screen-sized intensity image behind
its traces, into which each acquisition is deposited and which fades by a time constant or by a
per-acquisition factor. It is the library's and not a host's because the library is the side that
knows a trace's device geometry -- a host would be re-rasterising traces the renderer has already
staged, at a second derivation of the same mapping.

It is an **image and not a set of retained traces**, and that is the whole of its cost: one `f32`
cell per device pixel of the axes rect (`DensityGrid`), a cell's value a *number of sweeps*, so a
display of a thousand acquisitions costs what one costs and there is no depth to get wrong.
Measured on a 640x360 viewport's axes: **573x313 = 179 349 cells, 717 396 bytes** of grid, and one
byte per cell uploaded on the frame the grid moved.

- `Plot::accumulate_density()` deposits the acquisition on screen: every visible trace's window is
mapped to sample indices and gathered exactly as `Renderer::draw_traces()` maps it, then walked
column by column -- so the deposit is bounded by the axes' columns and not by the samples behind
them -- and a cell takes **1.0 once per trace per sweep**, however many of that trace's own
samples crossed it. Counting the hits instead put a single dense sweep at the ceiling of the
brightness scale and hid the sweeps behind it, and it made a cell mean "how much the beam moved
here" rather than "how many acquisitions were here"; the dedupe is a stamp per grid *row* (one
`u64`, keyed by trace and column) so two sweeps agreeing on a cell still count twice. Dwell is a
different question the library already answers (`Style::intensity_grading`).
- `decay_density(dt_s)` fades by the clock, `clear_density()` and switching the density off drop
the image at once. `DensityConfig` carries `full_scale` and `gamma`, applied on the CPU when the
grid changed: the value a host reads back through `ink()`/`peak()` and the picture it sees are
one derivation, and a frame whose grid did not move skips the conversion and the upload entirely
(`FrameStats::density_cells`/`density_upload_bytes`, the latter the *frame's* total over every
row, which one row's assignment used to overwrite).
- The renderer draws it as one attribute-less quad over the axes rect (`kDensityVS`/`kDensityFS`,
`DensityProgram`), over the grid and the invalid-span bands and **under the traces**, inside the
axes' clip: it reserves no layout space and nothing on it can be picked, exactly as
`Plot::set_invalid_spans()` does. `Style::density` is its tint.
- The two fades are the two questions a persistence display can be asked -- "still visible a second
later" and "the N-th back is gone" -- so the choice is the caller's.

Six cases, all in the suite: four plot-level ones (the grid's resolution and memory, the
per-acquisition schedule **584 -> 876 -> 1022** ink with `peak_steady=2.000`, `exp(-dt/tau)` off
the ink, and the deposit's own geometry including a NaN as a gap) and one on the real driver
(`a_phosphor_density_is_drawn_under_the_traces`: `cells=179349 uploaded=179349` on the moved frame
and `uploaded=0` on the identical one after it, with the trace's stroke keeping its own colour over
the ink). The suite is **396 cases, 0 failed** and all four ctest entries pass.

Martino Ferrari be1f31a04f feat: an open box zoom draws the frame the release will apply
The controller has always tracked its selection; nothing drew it, so a Ctrl or
Shift drag framed a range with no feedback until the release.

The preview is the area the release will change, not what the pointer swept:
Ctrl frames the x range only, so a band across the plot is what it will zoom,
where the sliver a straight horizontal drag sweeps is only the gesture. The
plot carries the rect a host hands it -- it learns nothing about pointers --
and the renderer draws a low-alpha fill under a light border over everything
else inside the axes.

`layout_.axes` reached the viewport's right edge, so the rightmost x tick
label -- centred on its tick -- had half of itself outside the plot, and
the newest sample's ink landed on the frame. `Plot::set_right_gutter()`
reserves a band there, out of the same `1 - kMinAxesShare` allowance the
label and title strips are served from, so it can no more squeeze `axes`
below the half-viewport floor than they can. `Figure` sets one value on
every row, the left gutter's reason: the rows' axes have to end on a
common column as well as start on one.

Nothing is drawn in the band, so unlike the strips it is a want and never
a measurement: no measuring pass, and it cannot feed the layout's fixed
point.

Martino FerrariandClaude Opus 4.6 59c2e45af7 feat(plot): an x axis caption drawn as chrome, not as an annotation
A host that re-anchors its x labels on a grid has to name the anchor somewhere, and
an `Annotation` cannot serve: its anchor is a data coordinate, so the caption crawls
across the plot under a pan and drifts under a zoom.

`Plot::set_x_note()` takes the host's own string -- the host is the only one that
knows how much precision the sum of a label and its caption needs -- and
`Renderer::draw_x_note()` places it in the axes' bottom-left corner in pixels, on the
legend's own backplate. It is measured in the renderer rather than in `Plot::layout()`
because it reserves no space and nothing can be picked on it, and a caption explaining
the x labels must not be able to move the layout those labels were measured into.

Martino Ferrari c960decaea feat(plot): the readout marker snaps to the sample it quotes, and the value mode is a choice
The mark was placed at the *pointer's* x with the quoted sample's y, so with the
nearest-sample readout it sat off the datum horizontally -- and further off the deeper
the zoom. `CrosshairRow` now carries the data `x` the value belongs to and the marker is
placed from it, so in `NearestSample` the mark lands on the sample the panel is quoting.
`Style::crosshair_marker_px` (9) and `crosshair_marker_width` (1.5) replace the
renderer's hard-coded 3 px arm and 1 px stroke: a snapped mark lands among a trace's own
sample dots (`marker_px`, 3) and at that size would read as one more sample rather than
as the answer to the question the hover asks.

`CrosshairValue` makes the previous behaviour reachable rather than deleted. The two
modes answer different questions -- `NearestSample` "which datum is under the pointer",
`Interpolated` "what is the signal at this instant" -- and only the caller knows which it
is asking, so the plot offers both with the sample as the default.
`crosshair_interpolate()` is restored for it.

`Plot::crosshair_point()` is the lookup with both coordinates, public because a host that
draws instruments of its own needs the same snap and a second rule for it would drift
from this one; `crosshair_value()` delegates to it.
2026-10-05 14:36:47 +02:00
Martino FerrariandClaude Opus 4.6 c028f48fa0 fix(plot): a crosshair readout quotes a sample, never a value between two
The readout's y was a linear interpolation between the two samples adjacent to
the pointer, which answers "what is the signal at this instant" -- a number the
series does not contain. On a source whose samples are already averaged or
decimated at ingest that is a value nothing measured, and at a zoom past the
sample spacing it is visibly not the datum under the pointer.

`crosshair_span()`'s `t` becomes a selector rather than a blend factor: the
nearer end wins, a tie reading the earlier sample (the bias the span already
takes for a degenerate pair). `t` is measured on the samples' own x through
`neighbours()`/`x_at()`, so "nearer" is exact on a non-uniform clock too, and
the lookup still reads level 0, so the value is a stored sample and never an
LOD bucket's aggregate. `crosshair_interpolate()` had no other caller and is
gone.

`CrosshairRow::marker` is placed from the same y, so the dot follows the
reported sample: past the sample spacing it sits beside the polyline rather
than on it, deliberately -- one y feeding both keeps the mark and the number
from ever disagreeing.

Martino Ferrari fba8d985cf feat(cursor): a cursor's stroke is its own -- width and dash
Cursors took `Style::line_width_px` and were always solid, so a host had no way to place a
*readout mark* on the data (a measured level, a peak, a pulse's edge) without it reading as
another instrument framing the plot. `set_cursor_stroke(id, width, dash)` gives it its own, the
same shape as `set_cursor_color()`: per cursor, because one plot holds both kinds.

`width <= 0` means the style's default for that cursor (`handle_width_px` while hovered or
grabbed, `line_width_px` otherwise), and a hover can only make the stroke *thicker* -- the cue
that the pointer has hold of something must not be the thing that hides it. `dash.off <= 0` is
solid, the convention a trace's, the crosshair's and the grid's dash already share.

Test: a_cursor_stroke_can_be_thinner_and_dashed -- a default cursor and a thin dashed one in the
same frame. The dashed column alternates ink and gap (153/151 at the 4/4 the test asks for)
while the solid one has no gaps; the ink laid down over each stroke's whole run of columns is
less for the thin one. That last assertion is deliberately *not* a single-column peak: a cursor
is a data position and is not snapped, so the solid stroke's ink split across two columns and
read *lighter* than the thin one -- which is how this test first failed.

Martino Ferrari 2dcd1f1864 feat(plot): an axis can write its labels relative to an origin, and time scales by prefix
A host zooming into a sub-second window cannot label it absolutely: Time
formatting uses three significant digits, so 12.345671s and 12.345672s are the
same string and a 1 ms step around a multi-second time is unlabelled. The axis
gains an `origin`: every value it writes is `v - origin`, and the ticks are
generated on the shifted grid, so the window reads 0, 500us, 1ms.
`origin_follows_range` re-takes the origin from the axis' own range on every
refresh -- the mode a *moving* window needs, since the edge is derived from the
newest sample at layout time and a value the host wrote a frame earlier is a
frame of scroll stale.

`format_time` now scales its sub-second values by prefix, the way `format_si`
does on a y axis: the unit that keeps the mantissa in [1, 1000). A fixed
millisecond unit printed 0.005ms where 5us is the reading, and 1e-05ms where
10ns is. An exact zero prints `0`, the same convention `format_si` states. The
origin subtraction's dust is snapped by a *relative* epsilon, so a tick on the
origin reads 0 rather than 1.78e-12ms.

Tested by `ticks_are_written_relative_to_an_axis_origin`,
`a_range_origin_puts_the_zero_tick_on_the_left_edge` and the extended
`format_time_shapes`; the suite is 359 cases, 0 failed.

Martino Ferrari 211c5b97bc feat(input): a cursor can be unselectable, for a host's readout marks
A host that draws the result of a computation as a cursor -- a ruler at a level
it measured, a marker at a time it found -- must not let the user drag it: the
value belongs to the measurement, not to the pointer. Parking it outside the
axis and re-placing it every frame does not achieve that, because a drag is held
for the gesture's life and the marker follows the pointer between frames, so the
readout *looks* draggable however often it is put back.

`Cursor::selectable` defaults true; the controller's hit test skips an
unselectable cursor, so it is neither hovered nor grabbed and its hit radius
goes to whatever is behind it. Set through `Plot::set_cursor_selectable()`.

Tested by `an_unselectable_cursor_is_neither_hovered_nor_grabbed` in
tests/test_controller.cpp.

Martino Ferrari 125cc1f64a feat(plot): set_cursor_color(), and a figure test for per-row rulers
A *readout* cursor -- a marker a host keeps for something it computed, rather
than an instrument the user placed -- has to be told apart from its neighbours,
and the cursor API could set everything about one except its colour. The setter
keeps the id and ignores a stale one, like the setters beside it.

Tested by `a_cursor_can_be_recoloured_by_id`, and the suite is 356 cases, 0
failed.

Martino Ferrari 133cd680ce feat(plot): set_annotation(), so a readout annotation can be moved
A host whose annotation is a readout -- the point where a cursor crosses a
trace -- has to move it every frame, and `add_annotation()` only appends:
the id would change every frame and the annotation count grow without bound.
The setter keeps the id, ignores a stale one exactly as the cursor setters
do, and pairs with parking (`visible = false`) since there is no
`remove_annotation`.

Tested by `an_annotation_can_be_moved_by_id` in tests/test_plot.cpp.

Breaking: Series::gather emits x relative to x0() and takes a GatherMode;
consumers reconstruct absolute x in f64 before mapping (series.hpp documents
the contract).

Bugs, each pinned by a fail-before regression test:
- render: f32 staging quantised epoch-time x into 128 px columns; every
data-space draw now stages to_space(x) - to_space(origin) with the origin
folded into the offset uniform in f64 (epoch/zero-origin twins rasterise
  identically)
- ticks: major test was ULP-fragile and blanked epoch axes; majors are an
integer-index test and are never truncated by the minor cap
- gather: LOD envelope emitted buckets straddling [begin, end); ceil/floor
bucket edges + raw lead/trail spans
- live follow: log x axes held a linear span and zoomed every frame; span and
offset now live in axis space (plot + both figure link-group paths)
- input: a zero-notch wheel disarmed auto_scale on every axis; dy==0 pans x,
factor == 1 / inf refused in wheel and drag zoom
- render: the single text flush painted legend names over the crosshair
readout panel; two batches, under flushed before the panel
- data: NaN dropped from min/max unless it seeded the fold; non-finite
samples are now excluded from every aggregate and from cached bounds

Robustness: viewport normalisation (no clamp UB), non-finite range refusal,
pyramid level cap at 57 (no shift/div UB through public gather), rounded ring
capacity documented + pre-sized, GL blend func and UNPACK_ALIGNMENT
save/restore, Renderer::release_gl() teardown, u64 buffer epochs, annotation
captions clamped, button-aware GLFW row capture, cached figure row rects (no
per-event layout), ruler-pair measurement refused, span-nonfinite guards in
axis_ends.

Features: XY series (sorted x, binary-search neighbours/snap, LOD over sample
index); StreamSeries::freeze(); ArraySeries::push(); per-trace dash and
markers (scatter at width 0) with auto or literal stride; GatherMode
Envelope/Nearest/Mean via bucket_sum/sumsq; Style::line_aa_px; per-glyph text
colour (readout values in trace colour); wheel-dx x pan; arrow-key pan;
Escape cancels a drag and restores captured ranges; modifier-masked box zoom
(Shift both, Ctrl x, Alt y); double-click reset via PointerEvent::time_s;
ImGui key repeat unified; pinch gestures on Qt and GTK; pixelDelta wheel path
and DevicePixelRatioChange handling; GNUInstallDirs, SOVERSION,
SameMinorVersion, generated plot/version.hpp, relocatable plot.pc, licence
install, FILES_MATCHING, GitHub Actions CI (debug/coverage/asan).

Suite 283 -> 350 cases, 0 failed; coverage 93.9% (3730/3971) over 24 files,
floor 80/90 held; ASAN preset suite green; all four demos run headless (the
GTK scripted-resize check needs a window manager and fails identically on the
parent commit); readme_main.cpp committed and compiles with the README
command; pkg-config and find_package consumption verified from a relocated
install prefix.

Martino Ferrari 1f5ce0d4a5 fix(plot, figure): re-index hot region, logical row floor, refuse live on a linked axis
Three smaller findings at the plot/figure seam:

* `Plot::remove_region()` re-indexed `region_stats_` but left `hot_.region`
naming the old index, so a frame after a removal highlighted the wrong
region's bound and an open drag edited a different region. The published
handle (and its zone) is now cleared or decremented with the cache, and the
contract documents that a host must not remove a region mid-drag.

* `Figure`'s `kMinRowHeightPx` was applied as a *device*-pixel floor while
chrome is logical, so at 2x the guarantee was half as strong exactly where
the chrome is twice as large. It is now a logical constant converted through
  the row's own `ui_scale()`, 1:1 for a non-positive scale as `Style::device()`
  does.

* `Figure::link_x()` refused a member whose axis 0 was `XFollow::Live`, but
nothing refused `set_x_follow(0u, XFollow::Live)` *after* linking. The group
then wrote its range into an axis that reinterpreted it against its own live
edge, read it back as an external change, and tracked one member instead of
the union. `Plot` now carries a linkage flag (`set_x_link_member()`), set by
  `link_x()` and cleared by `unlink_row()`, and `set_x_follow()` refuses `Live`
  on a linked axis.

Tests: arming `Live` on a linked member leaves it `Off` and unlinking restores
the ability to arm it; the row-height floor is 24 and 48 device pixels at 1x
and 2x respectively.

Martino Ferrari 81792dcd05 docs: correct three header comments that had drifted from the code 2026-09-28 22:17:55 +02:00
Martino Ferrari ed3a8ce645 licence: MIT LICENSE and SPDX identifiers in every first-party file
The repository had no licence at all, so every source was all-rights-reserved
by default. Add the verbatim MIT text at LICENSE (Copyright (c) 2026 Martino
Ferrari) and a two-line SPDX header to each of the 113 first-party sources --
48 include/plot, 26 src, 10 adapters, 5 examples, 21 tests, 3 tools -- so the
grant travels with each file rather than relying on the root document alone.

Scripts keep their shebang on line 1; the SPDX lines follow it. Genuinely
vendored code is untouched: third_party/stb_truetype.h carries no header of
ours. src/render/embedded_mono_font.cpp is generated, so tools/fonts/gen_atlas.py
emit() now writes the two lines into its header comment and the file was
regenerated -- gen_atlas.py --check passes and the regeneration adds only those
comment lines to the previously committed file.

Martino Ferrari daff60e3f0 fix(input, examples): a linked figure's wheel anchor uses the group's live edge, and every demo verdict reaches its exit status
Review fix pass 1 on the task 7 work; four findings, all closed.

1. The Qt demo's region sat across the middle of the window, which is exactly
where its own scripted input check pans: after the check's box zoom the press
opened DragMode::MoveRegion, the x range never moved, and the check printed
'input check pan FAIL' -- under an exit 0, because the verdict was printed and
not returned. The region now rides the left sixth (as the GLFW demo's does),
both checks pass, and the verdict is wired to the exit status. The same audit
found two more printed-only verdicts -- the GTK demo's scripted-resize layout
check and its screenshot write (and Qt's) -- now wired too. What stays
printed-only is the screenshot line of the GLFW host and the ImGui widget,
where the dump happens inside the adapter's frame loop.

2. A follow-ing link group was invisible to the input layer: a member's own axis
must be XFollow::Off (link_x() refuses a Live member), so Controller's
x_zoom_anchor() extrapolated a coordinate from the pointer instead of using
the live edge and a wheel over a row's axis strip walked the window back by
19% of its width (behind 0.000000 -> 0.285809 s). The group now publishes its
own edge to every member (Axis::live_owner + Plot::set_x_live_owner, written
by Figure::push_link, cleared when the group stops following or the row
unlinks), and x_zoom_anchor() reads it. Public-header addition, called out.
Measured after: behind 0.012992 s and the window's right edge bit-identical to
the edge the group published at the gesture.

3. The multiplot summary printed x_link_count() -- a number of groups -- under
'rows in it'. It now reports the members and the group count separately, and
every row line carries its own group id.

4. Host::controller_at() promised to clamp a pixel in a row gap to the nearest
row and only clamped below the last one, so a gap pixel went to row 0. It now
selects by distance, and tests/test_glfw_host.cpp pins it with a 40 px gap --
the first coverage of the host's figure routing, which needs no window.

New cases: tests/test_controller.cpp x2 (the anchor and the hint's lifecycle),
tests/test_glfw_host.cpp x3 (routing, the gap, the single-plot fallback): 229
cases, 0 failed, ASan clean. All five demos exit 0, the three self-checking
modes exit 0, and the amended assertions were confirmed failing against the
pre-fix behaviour.

Martino Ferrari a08b184481 fix(plot, render,gl): live streaming measurements, handed-back GL state
Final whole-branch review fixes.

1 (Important). Plot::measurement() cached on (series pointer, sample count)
only, so a saturated StreamSeries -- whose size() stays pinned while x0()
advances every acquire() -- froze its readout on the first saturated frame
until a cursor moved. The cache key now carries the series' x0() (new
MeasureSlot::last_x0), so a sliding window recomputes and a static series
still does not: asserted with a new macro-gated counter hook
(plot/detail/measure_count.hpp, PLOT_COUNT_MEASURE_RECOMPUTES, wired like the
pyramid and ring counters, absent from the release library). New case
saturated_stream_measurement_tracks_the_sliding_window: saturated ring,
stationary cursors, ramp in absolute x -- zero recomputes for repeated reads
with nothing moving, one per acquire while it slides.

2-3, 9. Spec: 4.3 described a GL_LINE_STRIP path that does not exist (there is
one rasteriser -- instanced anti-aliased quads -- and dense_threshold_spp
selects the gather level, not a primitive); 8 named a PLOT_GL_CHECK() macro
that exists nowhere, and stated no exception policy. The table, the field's
comment and 8 now describe the real gather-level threshold, the real
glGetError() drain plus the stores' drop-to-orphan fallbacks, and the real
policy: library failures return Status/bool, allocating entry points propagate
std::bad_alloc.

4. The frame handed back neither GL_UNPACK_ALIGNMENT (init() sets 1 for the
atlas) nor the clear colour (queried once with a new glGetFloatv entry).
end_frame() restores both and renderer.hpp lists them in the residue
contract.

5. draw() kept a host TextBackend for layout while drawing with its own font.
The renderer now installs its font unconditionally -- strips and labels measure
and draw with one backend -- with a debug-build diagnostic if a different one
was set, and Plot::set_text_backend() is documented as the no-renderer path.
New case renderer_measures_the_labels_it_draws asserts layout, measuring and
the drawn label's ink agree.

6-10. draw()'s style overwrite stated at the call site; the load-sensitive
wall-clock bound in test_measure.cpp replaced by a counter assertion (same
interval, same fold count over a 512x length ratio); dump_frame_ppm drops
noexcept and says why it may allocate; error.txt ignored (not this project's,
not generated here) rather than deleted.

Verified: debug and release build clean (-Wall -Wextra -Wpedantic -Wconversion
-Wshadow), 4/4 ctest entries pass, 130 cases pass (was 127), umbrella and
header self-containment checks pass, and no counter symbol in the release
archive.

Martino Ferrari 1f5aa11de2 fix(render): floor the axes so chrome cannot erase it, one title row per titled axis
Two findings on the pass-1 fix:

- The reserved strips were clamped only to the viewport, so a title wider than a
narrow panel took the rest of it and the axes collapsed: draw_traces() returned
on a zero-width rect (no trace drawn, nothing reported) and a zero-height one
flattened every trace onto a single row. The chrome is now capped at half the
viewport -- the label strip is served first, the title strip takes what is left
of that allowance -- an over-long title is clipped to its strip by a walk that
both measures and stages it, and draw_traces() tests the height as well as the
  width.
- Every titled y axis was staged at the same centred position inside one strip, so
a Left/Right pair of titles overprinted. Each titled axis now owns a text line:
the x strip grows one line per titled x axis (x_title_height), and the y runs
stack down the axes-tall strip, which needs no extra width for it.

Tests: `narrow_panel_with_a_long_y_title_still_draws` and
`short_panel_with_an_x_title_still_draws` pin the floor (the axes keeps half the
panel and the trace still covers the columns, with the title clipped into its
strip), `titled_axis_pairs_get_their_own_rows` pins one text row per titled axis
in both directions, and `layout_stacks_one_title_line_per_titled_axis` pins the
strip sizing. All fail against the pass-1 sources.

Martino Ferrari 8f45108559 fix(render): bind identity into the epoch, titles into reserved strips, one layout per frame
Four review findings on the Task 7 renderer:

- InstanceStore::epoch() is derived from gl::Buffer::generation() -- advanced by
every allocation, deletion and move -- plus the slot the instances were written
to, so the orphan fallback of grow_persistent() can no longer leave the vertex
array's attribute pointers bound to a deleted buffer: the epoch reports the new
identity and upload() re-points them before the draw.
- PlotLayout reserves y_title_area/x_title_area outside axes (sized from the text
metrics) and draw_titles() draws in them, so a title can no longer land on the
  data, whatever the envelope does.
- draw() computes plot.layout() once and hands it to the helpers, instead of six
times per frame, each of which rebuilt the ticks and the grid.
- A refused fence is no longer dropped: mark_drawn() falls back to the orphan path
and reports the failure rather than rotating through an unsynchronised slot.

New smoke cases force both refusals through the GL entry points (glMapBufferRange,
glFenceSync) and assert the pixels plus the live transfer mode; the title case
asserts the title colour is absent from the bands inside axes and present in both
strips. All three fail against the pre-fix sources.
